In request to unlatch it from the inside, you have to lift slightly and swing it open. This will only work for doors that open inward (into the home). I don't have the user manual, but there are some videos online. We used these for many years to prevent our autistic son from wandering. He's now 15 yo and has figured out how they work, so time to pass them on. There are some scuffs and surface wear; fully functional with no issues.
